In short
Visiting Taronga Zoo
Buy your entry online before you go โ the gate price is dearer than the website, and the smartest buy is a combined ferry-and-zoo ticket from Circular Quay rather than paying for the boat and the entry separately. The harbour crossing past the Opera House is half the day out, so ride the ferry rather than driving. Take the Sky Safari cable car from the wharf to the top gate on arrival and walk downhill back to the ferry, and aim to be at the koalas and the Seal Show early before the school groups pile in.
How to book it without overpaying
The mistake people make is buying a ferry ticket, then paying full price at the zoo gate. Book online instead, and buy the combined Sydney ferry-and-zoo pass from Circular Quay โ it bundles the harbour crossing and entry for less than the two bought separately, and the website entry price already undercuts the gate. It almost never sells out, so you donโt need to book weeks ahead, but do buy before you turn up in school holidays and on summer weekends, when the wharf queues for the boat are the real bottleneck rather than the zoo itself.
When you arrive at the wharf, ride the Sky Safari cable car straight up to the top gate and walk the loop downhill back to the ferry โ it saves the steep climb the hillside otherwise forces on you. Get there for the 09:30 opening, head first to the koalas and the Australian animals before the school groups land, then plan your route around the dayโs Seal Show and free-flight bird show times, which are posted on taronga.org.au.
Itโs the harbour, not the animals
Go in the morning: the animals are more active in the cool, the harbour light is better for the Opera House and Harbour Bridge views from the top of the hill, and youโll be ahead of the midday crowds. Allow three to four hours for the main loop, or a full half-day once you factor in the ferry each way and stopping for a show.
Itโs the setting that earns the ticket. As a collection of animals itโs a good city zoo, no more โ but perched on the north shore with the whole harbour below it, reached by a ferry past the Opera House, itโs a genuinely lovely family afternoon. If your Australia trip is short and youโd rather see wildlife in the wild, spend the day on a Blue Mountains trip or a bush wildlife park instead; come to Taronga for the koalas, the views and an easy day on the water with kids.
