How to visit without wasting the trip

The mistake people still make is assuming they can buy a ticket at the GEM the way they once did at the old downtown museum. Since the full opening in November 2025 there are no sales at the door at all — you book a dated, timed slot on the official visit-gem.com portal, and arriving without one means you simply don’t get in. In peak winter the better morning slots go two to five days ahead, so book the moment your Cairo dates are fixed rather than leaving it to the night before.

Buy the standard foreign-adult ticket at EGP 1,450 (about £20); it already covers the complete Tutankhamun galleries and the Solar Boat, so wave away anyone outside offering an “extra” or “VIP” ticket — there are no add-ons to buy. Cards work fine at the entrance and online, which matters in a country that otherwise runs on cash. Take an Uber from Zamalek or Giza rather than a street taxi, allow half an hour for the bag and security check even with a timed slot, and don’t try to bolt the museum onto the end of a hot Pyramids afternoon when you’re already flagging.

Timing your visit, and is it worth it?

Pick the earliest 09:00 slot. The galleries are genuinely quiet for the first hour before the coach groups arrive, the glass-walled Grand Staircase looks straight at the Pyramids two kilometres away in clear morning light, and the early entry spares you the punishing midday heat on the Giza plateau next door. Give it three to four hours; the Tutankhamun collection alone — over 5,000 objects shown together for the first time — rewards slowing down.

This is the one indoor sight in Cairo worth paying for, and it comfortably outdoes the cramped old Egyptian Museum on Tahrir. Pair it with a dawn morning at the Pyramids of Giza on the same side of the city rather than chasing Islamic Cairo across town the same day — the two GEM-and-Giza highlights sit minutes apart, and spacing the rest of Cairo out stops a packed first day turning into a slog.
