Eger Castle
How to do Eger's 1552 siege fortress in a morning: which ticket buys the casemates, when the museum buildings are shut, and whether the underground tour is worth the extra forints.
Where
Eger, Hungary
Opening hours
Castle grounds open daily, roughly 08:00–20:00 in summer and 08:00–18:00 in winter; the museum buildings (Bishop's Palace, Heroes' Hall, galleries) open about 10:00–18:00 Tuesday to Sunday and are closed on Mondays, when only the grounds are accessible at the reduced rate. The casemates run on timed guided slots through the day. Always confirm the season's hours on egrivar.hu before you go.
Tickets
Grounds and walls only about 1,600 Ft (~£4); the full ticket including the castle museum, Bishop's Palace and Heroes' Hall about 3,400 Ft (~£8). The guided casemate (underground) tour is an extra ~1,200 Ft (~£3). Students and over-62s discounted; reduced Monday grounds-only rate when the indoor exhibits are shut.
Time needed
Allow about 1.5 to 2 hours: roughly 45 minutes for the museum and Heroes' Hall, 30–40 minutes on the walls and panorama, plus the 40-minute casemate tour if you add it.
In short
Visiting Eger Castle
Eger Castle is the hilltop fortress that held off a far larger Ottoman army in 1552, and you buy it as tiers: a cheap grounds-and-walls ticket of about 1,600 Ft (~£4) lets you walk the bastions and the views, while the full ticket of about 3,400 Ft (~£8) adds the István Dobó Castle Museum, the Gothic Bishop's Palace and the Heroes' Hall with Dobó's tomb. The underground casemates (kazamaták) are seen only on a separate guided slot, so add that at the ticket office if you want the tunnels. Note the museum buildings close on Mondays while the grounds stay open at the reduced rate, so it pays to go Tuesday to Sunday.
Which ticket to buy, and what shuts on Mondays
Eger Castle sells on tiers, and picking the wrong one is the only real mistake here. A grounds-and-walls ticket of about 1,600 Ft (~£4) lets you walk the bastions and take in the panorama over the baroque town — fine if the view and the siege walls are all you want. The full ticket of about 3,400 Ft (~£8) adds the indoor sights: the István Dobó Castle Museum in the Gothic Bishop’s Palace, the Heroes’ Hall (Hősök terme) with Dobó’s tomb set into the floor, and the picture gallery. Buy at the gate ticket office — it rarely sells out, so there’s no need to book ahead.
The catch is the day. The museum buildings close on Mondays, when only the grounds stay open at the reduced rate, so go Tuesday to Sunday if you want the interiors. The underground casemates (kazamaták) are seen only on a separate timed guided slot, roughly 1,200 Ft (~£3) on top; reserve the next slot when you buy your ticket rather than arriving for the tunnels near closing.
Worth it? The honest take on Eger Castle
Come in the morning, before the Budapest day-trippers and coach groups arrive, and you’ll have the walls and the Heroes’ Hall largely to yourself. Grounds open from about 08:00 (to 20:00 in summer, 18:00 in winter); the museum buildings run roughly 10:00 to 18:00. Allow about an hour and a half to two hours — 45 minutes for the museum and Dobó’s hall, half an hour on the walls, and the 40-minute casemate tour if you add it.
Worth it for the 1552 siege story and the view, not for grand interiors. A few hundred defenders holding off Suleiman’s army — the tale immortalised in Gárdonyi’s Eclipse of the Crescent Moon — is what carries the place, and the Bishop’s Palace museum and the casemates tell it well. The dungeon and waxworks are skippable. Do the castle and the 40-metre minaret in the morning, then walk out to the Valley of the Beautiful Women for the Bull’s Blood cellars in the afternoon — that pairing is the whole point of Eger.
