How to visit without wasting the trip

The interior of the Hungarian Parliament is only seen on a 45-minute guided tour, and the English-language slots are capped and routinely sell out two to five days ahead in peak season — so book a timed ticket online before you fly, direct on jegymester.hu or through a reputable tour partner. The mistake people make is assuming they can rock up on Kossuth tér and walk in; in practice you collect at the visitor centre on the square’s north side, clear an airport-style security check, and join your exact slot. Carry photo ID, because UK passport holders pay the non-EU rate of about 13,000 Ft (~£32) while EU citizens pay roughly half that, around 6,800 Ft, and the desk does check.

What the ticket actually buys is the part you can’t see from the river: the gilded ceremonial staircase, the Hungarian crown jewels guarded under the central dome, and the old Upper House debating chamber. The exterior is free to admire from the Pest embankment all day, so don’t pay just to photograph the facade — pay to go in.

Worth the ticket? When to book your slot

Take an early-morning slot, ideally the first or second departure, to get ahead of the coach groups and, in July and August, the worst of the heat on the open square. One thing to check before you book: tours are suspended when Parliament is sitting, so the available days and times shift week to week. Allow about an hour and a half in total — the tour is 45 minutes, but arrive twenty minutes early for the security queue.

It’s worth the entry if interiors and history are your thing, and it pairs naturally with St Stephen’s Basilica and the Danube promenade a short walk south. Then come back after dark and see it floodlit from the Buda bank or a Danube evening cruise — that view is free, and arguably the more memorable half of the experience.
