Opening hours

The museum sections generally open from mid-morning daily, roughly 09:30 onward, with last entry in the afternoon; the Crystal Gallery keeps its own hours. Times vary seasonally and on festival days. Confirm current hours and prices on the official site.

Tickets

General museum entry is around โ‚น300 (about ยฃ2.40), with a camera fee on top in places. The Crystal Gallery is a separate, noticeably pricier ticket. Buy at the gate; prices change, so treat figures as a guide.

Time needed

About 1.5โ€“2 hours for the main palace museum, more if you add the Crystal Gallery and linger over the lake views.

In short

Visiting City Palace

Rajasthan's largest palace complex, a wall of carved stone, balconies and cupolas rising straight off the east bank of Lake Pichola. Go when it opens to beat the heat and the tour-bus crush. The Mor Chowk peacock mosaics and the lake views are the highlights; the separately ticketed Crystal Gallery is an optional add-on.

The palace, and whatโ€™s worth your time

The City Palace is Rajasthanโ€™s largest palace complex, and from the lake itโ€™s the defining image of Udaipur โ€” a long wall of honey-coloured stone, balconies, arches and cupolas rising straight off the east bank of Lake Pichola. Begun in the sixteenth century and added to by successive Maharanas, itโ€™s a warren of courtyards, narrow staircases and mirrored chambers that climbs to terraces with the best views in the city. Part of it is a museum; part remains royal residence and luxury hotel.

Head for the highlights rather than trying to absorb everything. The Mor Chowk peacock mosaics โ€” three peacocks in coloured glass and tile representing the seasons โ€” are the showpiece, and the upper terraces give you Lake Pichola, the Lake Palace floating on it and the Aravalli hills beyond. General museum entry is modest, around โ‚น300 (about ยฃ2.40), with a camera fee in places. The Crystal Gallery, with its rare Osler crystal collection, is a separate and notably pricier ticket where photography is usually banned โ€” a worthwhile extra only if crystal genuinely draws you.

Beating the heat and the crowds

Go right at opening, mid-morning. Udaipur is fiercely hot for much of the year, and the palaceโ€™s tight staircases and courtyards bottleneck quickly once the tour coaches arrive; getting in first lets you work up through the rooms to the lake-view terraces while theyโ€™re still quiet. Allow an hour and a half to two hours for the main museum, more with the Crystal Gallery.

The entrance is up from the lakefront near Jagdish Temple, and it pairs naturally with a sunset boat trip on Pichola afterwards. Hours shift with the season and on festival days, and ticket prices are revised from time to time, so confirm the current opening times and fees on the official site before you go rather than trusting a guidebook figure.

City Palace FAQs

How much is entry to Udaipur City Palace?
General museum entry runs around โ‚น300 (about ยฃ2.40), with a small camera charge in some areas. The Crystal Gallery is ticketed separately and costs considerably more. Prices are revised periodically, so check the current rate at the gate or on the official site rather than relying on an exact figure.
Is the Crystal Gallery worth the extra?
Only for some. It holds a rare collection of Osler crystal โ€” furniture, fountains, even a bed โ€” but it's a steep add-on and photography is usually banned inside. If your time and budget are tight, the main palace, the Mor Chowk peacock mosaics and the lake views give you the City Palace's real character.
When should you visit?
Right at opening. Udaipur gets brutally hot for much of the year and the courtyards and narrow staircases bottleneck badly once the coach groups arrive mid-morning. Get in early, work up through the palace to the lake-view terraces while it's quiet, and you'll enjoy it far more.
