Where to stay in Canggu

The walkable heart and the cleanest first-timer pick: the main beginner surf beach, board and lesson rental on the sand, and the cafes of Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong and Jalan Batu Bolong on foot. The trade-off is noise and scooter traffic right past the cafe doors, so book a room a lane or two back from the main strip if you are a light sleeper.

The calmer northern edge, with rice-field views still in places, a slower rhythm and better value per night than Batu Bolong. It works for couples and longer-stay nomads who want quiet at night, but you will ride a scooter in for the busiest cafes and the main beach scene rather than walk.

The beach-club and family end, with bigger villas, private pools and a more polished feel than the surf core. Good value for groups sharing a villa and quieter at night, but it is more spread out, so you will lean on a scooter or Grab to get around and the beach-club day-bed minimum spends run high by Indonesian standards.

Canggu's western corner around the more advanced reef break, with low-key warungs facing the waves and a fishing-village feel at Nelayan. Choose it for surf, sunset and old-Canggu atmosphere away from the Batu Bolong crowds; the trade-off is fewer big restaurants and a longer hop to Berawa's clubs.

The southern edge nearest the airport, handy if you want one foot in Canggu and easier hops to Seminyak's restaurants. It is pricier and more built-up, with less of the rice-field feel that draws people to Canggu, but the better airport-day choice if you are arriving late or leaving early.
