In short
Montego Bay at a glance
Montego Bay is the default first base for a Jamaica trip because Sangster (MBJ) is where almost every UK flight lands, and the big all-inclusives along the Hip Strip and Rose Hall are 10 to 45 minutes from the terminal โ the shortest transfers on the island. Stay in the resort zones, treat it as a beach-and-excursion base rather than a city to wander, and avoid the inland neighbourhoods GOV.UK names (Flankers, Mount Salem, Rose Heights). Use it for the north-coast day trips and a Doctor's Cave swim, then decide whether to move on to Negril or Ocho Rios.
The short version
- Sangster (MBJ) is Jamaica's main gateway, so Montego Bay gives you the shortest airport transfer โ many resorts are 10 to 45 minutes from the terminal.
- Stay in the resort corridor: the Hip Strip (Gloucester Avenue) for walkable bars, or Rose Hall and Ironshore for the big self-contained all-inclusives.
- Avoid the inland neighbourhoods GOV.UK flags โ Flankers, Mount Salem and Rose Heights โ and use a licensed JUTA transfer rather than a flagged-down taxi.
- It is a base, not a sightseeing city: the value is the beach plus north-coast day trips to Dunn's River Falls and the Martha Brae, not a town centre to explore on foot.
- Pre-book Doctor's Cave Beach, Rose Hall Great House and any excursion to fix the price โ turning up and negotiating on the day is the classic mistake here.
Montego Bay is where your Jamaica trip starts whether you planned it that way or not โ Sangster takes almost every UK flight, so the question isnโt whether you pass through but how long you stay. The honest answer is that itโs an arrival base, not a destination city. Its value is the short transfer, the cluster of big all-inclusives at Rose Hall, and the run of north-coast excursions within an easy drive; it is not a town centre you wander. First-timers who try to treat the working city like a walkable resort end up disappointed and, worse, drifting inland towards Flankers, Mount Salem or Rose Heights โ the neighbourhoods GOV.UK names and the resort coast deliberately keeps its distance from. Stay in the resort corridor between the Hip Strip and Rose Hall, plan point-to-point with a licensed JUTA car, and use Montego Bay for what itโs good at.
The two mistakes that cost people most are the Hip Strip and the day-of negotiation. Doctorโs Cave is a genuinely good swim, but the Stripโs hustle and inflated US-dollar pricing wear thin fast, so donโt make it your whole stay. And anything youโd want to do โ Rose Hall, the Martha Brae raft, a Dunnโs River day trip out near Ocho Rios โ is cheaper and calmer booked ahead through a licensed operator than haggled at the gate. Sort your airport transfer with JUTA before you land, decide early whether youโre staying put or pushing on to Negril, and the rest of the trip falls into place.

Top things to do in Montego Bay
Doctor's Cave Beach
Doctor's Cave Beach is a private bathing club on Gloucester Avenue, the Hip Strip, about 3km (10 minutes) from Sangster airport โ so unlike the free public sand on the town side, you pay to get in. Entry is around US$6 (โ ยฃ4.70) for adults and US$3 (โ ยฃ2.35) for children, which buys you the gated, lifeguarded, clean stretch of calm white sand and clear water the club has guarded since 1906. Loungers and umbrellas are rented separately, roughly US$8 each. The catch is timing: get there for the 08:30 opening and you have the reef largely to yourself; arrive after 11:00 in cruise season and you share it with several ships' worth of day-trippers. Budget a half-day, pay the small fee, and treat it as the swim you book rather than a sight you tour.
Rose Hall Great House
Rose Hall is the restored 18th-century plantation great house 15 minutes east of the Hip Strip, hung on the legend of Annie Palmer, the 'White Witch'. There are two different visits: a roughly 45-minute daytime guided tour through the furnished rooms, and the after-dark Night Terrors tour, lit by candle and built around the ghost story, which is the better choice if the legend is what brought you. It sits right beside the big Rose Hall all-inclusives, so it is the easiest standalone outing on this coast โ book a slot and pair it with the beach rather than driving out specially.
Where to stay first
The areas that make a first visit easier โ not an exhaustive directory.
Hip Strip (Gloucester Avenue)
ยฃยฃ mid-rangeThe walkable tourist seafront: bars, craft markets, Doctor's Cave Beach and Margaritaville, all on one stretch about 10 minutes from the airport. Lively and convenient if you want to wander out for dinner, but it is busy and touristy, and it is the one zone where pestering from hustlers is common.
Best for: First-timers who want walkable bars and beach
Rose Hall and Ironshore
ยฃยฃยฃ premiumThe strip of large self-contained all-inclusives east of the airport โ Hyatt Ziva, Iberostar, Hilton and others โ set on their own beaches around the Rose Hall estate. You rarely leave the grounds, which is the point: pick this for an easy resort week with a short transfer rather than a town to explore.
Best for: Big all-inclusive resort weeks
Montego Bay Marine Park / Walter Fletcher
ยฃ valueThe Aquasol / Walter Fletcher Beach end near the town side, with calmer family swimming and the marine park offshore. Closer to the working town than the Hip Strip, so handier for a quick shopping run but with less of the polished resort feel.
Best for: Families wanting calm swimming near town
Airport to city centre
| Option | Time | Cost | Book ahead? |
|---|---|---|---|
| JUTA private transfer to Hip Strip resorts | ~10-15 min | about ยฃ16-24 / US$20-30 for 1-4 people | Licensed; GOV.UK advises licensed services |
| JUTA / resort shuttle to Rose Hall & Ironshore | ~15-30 min | about ยฃ20-32 / US$25-40 | Often included on package transfers |
| Hotel courtesy shuttle (many all-inclusives) | 10-45 min depending on resort | usually included in package | Confirm pickup with your hotel ahead |
| Onward JUTA private transfer to Negril or Ocho Rios | ~1h15-1h30 | about ยฃ55-95 / US$70-120 for 1-4 people | Best for moving on the same day |
When to go
Sweet spot: Mid-December to mid-April is the dry, reliable peak for sun and calm sea, but it is also the priciest and busiest stretch along Rose Hall and the Hip Strip. Late April to early June and November are the best balance of weather and value, on the shoulders of the season.
The dry season runs roughly December to April, peaking on price over Christmas, New Year and Easter. May and June bring short afternoon showers but better rates. The Atlantic hurricane season is June to November, with peak storm risk August to October โ Montego Bay's resort coast came through the October 2025 Hurricane Melissa landfall far better than the harder-hit southwest, but travel-disruption insurance still matters in those months.
What it costs
UK return economy to Montego Bay (MBJ) runs roughly ยฃ550-ยฃ850 direct from London, dipping to around ยฃ500 on cheap shoulder-season dates and climbing past ยฃ900 over Christmas, Easter and the July-August school holidays. TUI package charters from Manchester, Birmingham and Gatwick can undercut flight-plus-hotel booked separately if an all-inclusive suits you.
Daily budget per person
At all-inclusives your main cash need is tips, US$1-2 per service. Off the resort, prices are quoted in both currencies โ pay in Jamaican dollars where you can, as US-dollar pricing on the Hip Strip is usually rounded against you, and your change comes back in JMD anyway.
