Where to stay in Casablanca

For a short gateway stop, Gauthier is the calm central default, the Sidi Belyout centre walks to Casa-Port trains, and Ain Diab suits only a seafront splurge.

In short

Where to stay in Casablanca

For a short Casablanca stop, base yourself in Gauthier unless you have a clear reason not to. It is the calmest central district, walkable to restaurants and a 10-minute ride from Casa-Port station for the train onward to Marrakech or Fez. Choose the Sidi Belyout city centre by Casa-Port if you want to walk to your train, Maarif for modern cafes and shopping, and the Ain Diab Corniche only if a seafront splurge is the point.

The short version

  • Best all-rounder for a short stop: Gauthier.
  • Best for rail convenience: the Sidi Belyout city centre, a walk from Casa-Port station.
  • Best for modern cafes and shopping: Maarif, around the Twin Center.
  • Best seafront splurge: Ain Diab / the Corniche, but only if you accept a taxi to the trains.
  • Skip booking purely for proximity to the Hassan II Mosque; almost everywhere central is a short petit-taxi ride from it.

Best areas to book

Gauthier

ยฃยฃ mid-range

Casablanca's most comfortable central district and the best default: calmer, well-kept streets, reliable mid-range hotels and good restaurants, an easy walk or 10-minute petit-taxi from the centre. The pick if you want a relaxed evening without losing time on transfers.

Best for: Couples, solo travellers, quieter nights

City centre (Sidi Belyout / Casa-Port)

ยฃยฃ mid-range

The most practical base if your trip is really about the onward train: walking distance to Casa-Port station and the Art Deco core around Place Mohammed V, and a short taxi from the mosque. Busier and rougher at night than Gauthier, but it saves a transfer every morning.

Best for: Gateway stops, early trains, first-timers

Maarif

ยฃยฃ mid-range

A modern shopping and residential district around the Twin Center and Marchรฉ Central, with the city's best concentration of cafes and dinner spots. More everyday local life than tourist sights, and a little further from Casa-Port, so factor a tram or taxi for an early departure.

Best for: Food, shopping, longer stays

Browse hotels 15 min from centre

Ain Diab / Corniche

ยฃยฃยฃ premium

The beachfront strip west of the Hassan II Mosque with the city's smartest hotels and the closest beds to the mosque itself. Choose it only for a one-off seafront splurge; it is a 15-20 minute taxi from Casa-Port and the centre, which adds up on a one- or two-night stop.

Best for: Beach-first stays, a one-off splurge

The simple choice

If you are booking in a hurry, filter for Gauthier first, then check the Sidi Belyout city centre near Casa-Port if you have an early onward train and want to walk to it. That single rule keeps most short-stay visitors out of the common trap: paying a premium for an Ain Diab seafront room and then spending ยฃ20-ยฃ28 on taxis to and from the station every day.

Getting to and from the trains

Casablanca is a gateway: most visitors arrive on the ONCF airport train (about 45 minutes to Casa-Voyageurs, roughly 50 MAD / ยฃ4) and leave on an Al Atlas intercity train. Gauthier and the Sidi Belyout centre are both a short ride or walk from Casa-Port; from Ain Diab you should budget a petit taxi for every train. If you have a pre-dawn departure to Marrakech, the centre near Casa-Port is the only base that lets you skip a taxi entirely.

Safety and noise

Casablanca is generally safe for visitors, with petty theft and pushy touts the main nuisance rather than serious crime. For accommodation that means a quieter Gauthier or Maarif street usually beats a room on the busy strips around Casa-Port, especially if you are arriving late off a flight. Use red petits taxis at night and insist on the meter or agree the fare before getting in.

Where to stay in Casablanca FAQs

What is the best area to stay in Casablanca for a first visit?
Gauthier. It is the calmest central district, full of reliable mid-range hotels and restaurants, and only a 10-minute petit-taxi from Casa-Port station and the Art Deco centre. Pick the Sidi Belyout city centre instead if you specifically want to walk to your onward train.
Should I stay near the Hassan II Mosque?
Only if you want the Ain Diab beachfront anyway. The mosque is a short, cheap petit-taxi ride from any central district, so there is no need to pay an Ain Diab seafront premium just to be near it. Gauthier or the city centre keep you closer to the trains and restaurants.
Is Ain Diab too far out for a short stay?
For a one- or two-night gateway stop, usually yes. The Corniche is the nicest setting and has the smartest hotels, but it is a 15-20 minute taxi from Casa-Port, so you will spend time and money shuttling to the station and centre. Save it for a longer or beach-focused stay.
