In short
Visiting Ponta da Piedade
Ponta da Piedade is the headland of ochre sea-stacks, arches and hidden coves that defines Lagos and much of the Algarve postcard. It is free to reach and walk: follow the clifftop path from Praia do Pinhรฃo, ideally near sunset, then descend the steep staircase to the waterline. The grottoes seen from the water are the optional paid upgrade by boat or kayak.
The headland and the walk
Ponta da Piedade is the headland of ochre sea-stacks, arches and hidden coves that turns up on every Algarve postcard, and it sits just south of Lagos old town. The best way to meet it is on foot: pick up the clifftop path from Praia do Pinhรฃo and follow the edge round, with the rock formations dropping into impossibly turquoise water beneath you. Walking in takes around half an hour, or you can drive, taxi or take a seasonal tourist train to the car park by the lighthouse โ but do some of it on foot if you can, because the approach is half the pleasure.
The reward at the point is the steep staircase zig-zagging down to the waterline, where you stand among the towers of golden rock at sea level. It is a proper climb back up, so take water in the heat. All of this โ the paths, the lighthouse viewpoints, the staircase โ is completely free.
Timing it, and the boat upgrade
Come near sunset if you possibly can. The low light turns the cliffs deep gold and the crowds that build through the day start to thin, so the headland feels far more like the wild coast it is. Mornings are quieter and cooler if sunset is busy with your schedule.
The optional paid upgrade is a boat or kayak trip to the grottoes โ small craft slip inside the arches and into sea caves you simply cannot see from the clifftop. If the water is calm and you have a spare hour, it adds a genuinely different angle; if it is rough, skip it without regret, because the free clifftop views are the real headline. Honest caveat: this is a popular spot and the main viewpoints get busy and a touch chaotic at peak times. Walk a little further along the path than everyone else, and you will usually find a quiet ledge to yourself.
