Ibiza

Ibiza for UK travellers: where to base yourself for clubbing, quiet coves or kids, what the famous clubs really cost, and how to do the island without setting foot in San Antonio's West End.

In short

Ibiza at a glance

Ibiza is really two islands sharing one airport. There's the clubbing Ibiza of Pacha, Amnesia and San Antonio's West End, and there's the quiet Ibiza of pine-backed coves, a UNESCO old town in Dalt Vila and family resorts on the east coast. Direct flights from most UK airports take about 2h25 from Gatwick, the airport is 15 minutes from Ibiza Town, and the trick is simply picking the right base for the holiday you actually want. Don't assume the whole island is a rave โ€” most of it isn't.

Ibiza has an image problem, and the image is San Antonioโ€™s West End at 3am. That version of the island is real and itโ€™s brilliant if itโ€™s what you came for โ€” but itโ€™s a few streets on one bay, and the rest of Ibiza is something else entirely: a UNESCO-listed walled town in Dalt Vila, pine forests in the north, and a string of west-coast coves with water clear enough that people fly back just for it. The single most useful decision youโ€™ll make is your base, because Ibiza Town, San Antonio, Santa Eulร ria and the north are effectively four different holidays sharing one small airport.

If clubbing is the point, go in with eyes open about the money. Entry to a big-name club like Pacha or Amnesia runs roughly ยฃ25โ€“ยฃ70 depending on the DJ, drinks inside are ยฃ15โ€“ยฃ18 a pop, and because everyone leaves at once the taxi home is its own small battle. One proper club night comfortably tops ยฃ100 a head before youโ€™ve eaten. Buy tickets online ahead rather than at the door, use the summer Discobus between venues, and remember the clubs run a season โ€” opening and closing parties bracket the year, so a quiet shoulder-month trip may find your venue shut.

And if clubbing isnโ€™t the point, Ibiza quietly delivers one of the best beach-and-old-town weeks in the Med. Hire a car (youโ€™ll want one by day three), work the calas โ€” Comte for the sunset, Salada for snorkelling, Ses Salines by the salt flats โ€” and take the half-hour ferry from Ibiza Town port over to Formentera, where Ses Illetes is the water everyone means when they call the Balearics Caribbean. Base in Santa Eulร ria or the north, time it for May, June or September, and youโ€™ll have a hard job spotting the Ibiza of the postcards.

The route

A relaxed week that mixes Ibiza's two sides without committing to one โ€” old town and coves first, a beach-club or proper club night if you want it, and a day on Formentera to see why people rave about the water. Hire a car for the coves; you'll want one by day three.

  1. Days 1โ€“2

    Ibiza Town & Dalt Vila

Base near the old town: climb the walls of Dalt Vila (the UNESCO citadel) at golden hour, eat in the marina and decide whether you want a club night. The L10 bus from the airport is โ‚ฌ3.60; a taxi is about โ‚ฌ20 for the 15-minute hop.

  2. Days 3โ€“4

    The west-coast coves

Pick up a hire car and work the calas: Cala Comte for the turquoise sunset water, Cala Salada near Sant Antoni for snorkelling, Ses Salines by the salt flats for the see-and-be-seen crowd. Go before 11am in summer โ€” the small car parks fill fast.

  3. Day 5

    Formentera day trip

Ferry from Ibiza Town port (next to Dalt Vila) โ€” around 30 minutes, roughly โ‚ฌ35 return as a foot passenger. The Caribbean-clear water at Ses Illetes is the reason people gush about the Balearics. Take the first boat to beat the day-trippers.

  4. Days 6โ€“7

Slow north or one big night

Either drive north to Portinatx and Sant Joan for pine-quiet beaches and an organic lunch, or commit to one proper club night (Pacha, Amnesia or [hi] at Playa d'en Bossa). Budget ยฃ100+ a head if you club โ€” entry, drinks and the taxi home all add up.

Where to base yourself

Pick one or two bases rather than moving every night.

Ibiza Town (Eivissa / Marina)

ยฃยฃยฃ premium

The best all-rounder: the Dalt Vila old town, the smartest restaurants, the Formentera ferry and a handful of clubs within a taxi of each other. Pricier than the resorts but you get culture and nightlife without choosing one โ€” and the airport is 15 minutes away.

Best for: Clubbing plus culture, couples, first-timers

San Antonio (Sant Antoni)

ยฃ value

The cheap-and-cheerful party base on the west coast: the Sunset Strip for the famous sundowns, the West End for the rowdy, lager-soaked nightlife. Brilliant if that's the holiday you want, grim if it isn't โ€” the West End is loud until dawn, so pick a hotel well away from it for any peace.

Best for: Budget clubbers, stag and hen groups, sunsets

Santa Eulร ria des Riu

ยฃยฃ mid-range

The family choice: a calm seafront promenade, shallow swimming, playgrounds and restaurants over rave bars. Quieter and better value than Ibiza Town, with enough going on that older kids and teens won't sulk. A car helps for reaching the better coves.

Best for: Families, couples wanting calm, longer stays

The north (Portinatx, Sant Joan, Sant Miquel)

ยฃยฃ mid-range

Pine forests, organic restaurants, yoga retreats and small bays where the loudest sound is cicadas. This is Ibiza for people who don't want Ibiza's reputation โ€” but you'll need a hire car, as buses are thin and taxis from up here are dear.

Best for: Quiet, wellness, walkers, car-hire essential

Getting around Ibiza

Buses link the airport and the main resorts cheaply (the L10 airport bus is โ‚ฌ3.60 to Ibiza Town), but services thin out badly in the evening and barely reach the north, so a hire car is close to essential if you want the coves or anywhere away from your resort. Reckon on ยฃ30โ€“ยฃ50 a day for a small car in summer plus pricey town parking. Taxis are metered and fair for short hops โ€” about โ‚ฌ20 airport to Ibiza Town โ€” but supply collapses at club kick-out time, so book ahead or expect a long wait. The Discobus runs club-goers between the big venues and resorts through the summer nights.

Ibiza FAQs

Do you have to go clubbing in Ibiza?
No โ€” that's the biggest myth about the island. Plenty of UK visitors never set foot in a club: the west-coast coves, the Dalt Vila old town in Ibiza Town, a Formentera day trip and the quiet north make a full holiday on their own. Base yourself in Santa Eulร ria or the north and you'd barely know the clubs exist.
How much does a night out clubbing in Ibiza cost?
More than people expect. Big-name club entry runs roughly ยฃ25โ€“ยฃ70 depending on the DJ and night, drinks inside are ยฃ15โ€“ยฃ18 (water can be ยฃ10), and the taxi home is dear because everyone leaves at once. Budget ยฃ100 or more a head for one proper club night before food. Buying tickets online ahead of time usually beats the door price.
What is the best area to stay in Ibiza for families?
Santa Eulร ria des Riu on the east coast: a calm promenade, shallow beaches, playgrounds and restaurants rather than rave bars, and far enough from San Antonio's nightlife to actually sleep. It's better value than Ibiza Town, though a hire car helps for reaching the prettier coves.
When is the best time to visit Ibiza?
May, June, September and early October: the sea is warm, the coves aren't rammed and you can still park at the small beaches. July and August bring peak heat, peak prices and peak crowds โ€” and many clubs only run their full programmes across the summer season, so check opening and closing party dates if clubbing is the point.
