In short
Visiting Alanya Castle & cable car
The Seljuk fortress crowning the Alanya headland is the one unmissable thing in town. Rather than sweat up the hairpin road, take the teleferik (cable car) from beside Cleopatra Beach; a return ride costs in the region of 500โบ (about ยฃ8), with a separate, modest ticket for the inner fortress at the top. Go in the late afternoon so you walk the walls as the sun drops over the harbour. Allow a couple of hours for the ride, the ramparts and the photos.
The ride up, and what it costs
The Seljuk fortress on the rocky headland is the one sight in Alanya you shouldnโt miss, and the smart way up is the teleferik (cable car) that lifts from beside Cleopatra Beach rather than the long, hot road of hairpin bends. A return ride works out at roughly 500โบ (about ยฃ8), with a single a little cheaper; carry some lira, as fares are nudged up with the season and the exchange rate. At the top, the inner fortress (ฤฐรง Kale) charges its own modest entry on top of the cable-car fare, so budget a little extra if you want to go inside the walls rather than just enjoy the grounds and the views.
If queues are long in peak summer, a taxi or a shared dolmuล will also get you up โ but the cable car is half the fun, and the slow rise over the bay is the bit youโll photograph.
When to go, and is it the highlight?
Aim for late afternoon. The ramparts are exposed and the midday sun is fierce, so arriving as the heat eases means you can actually linger โ and youโll be walking the walls as the sun drops over the harbour and the twin bays, which is when the headland looks its best. Allow about two hours for the ride each way, the inner fortress and time to wander the old lanes near the top.
Is it worth it? Without question โ this is the thing that lifts Alanya above a standard beach resort. The medieval walls, the long views down to the red-tiled old town and the shimmering Med below all earn the trip. Keep expectations realistic: parts of the fortress are ruins rather than restored showpieces, and summer crowds build at the cable-car base. Go later in the day, take your time on the ramparts, and pair it with the Red Tower and harbour down at sea level.
