How to visit the Burj Khalifa: which observation deck to book (124/125 vs the 148 SKY), why the sunset slot costs double, and whether the view is worth the ticket.

Where

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Opening hours

Roughly 10:00โ€“20:00 daily for At the Top (124/125), last entry 19:00; the SKY deck (148) closes its last entry earlier, around 18:00. Sunset slots vary month to month, so check the time against the official site for your travel dates.

Tickets

At the Top (levels 124/125): from about AED 189 (~ยฃ40) in non-prime hours, rising to roughly AED 240โ€“250 (~ยฃ52) for the prime sunset slot. At the Top SKY (level 148): from about AED 380โ€“550 (~ยฃ80โ€“ยฃ120) depending on time. Under-4s free.

Time needed

60โ€“90 minutes on the decks; add 20โ€“30 minutes for security and the lift queue even with a timed ticket, and longer if you walk in through Dubai Mall.

In short

Visiting Burj Khalifa

Book a timed Burj Khalifa slot online before you go โ€” non-sunset slots are roughly half the price of the prime hour, and the cheaper times sell out first. The standard 'At the Top' ticket covers levels 124 and 125 (about 452m); the SKY ticket adds level 148 at 555m for two to three times the cost. The whole point is the view, so go on a clear day; in summer haze and dust the photos disappoint regardless of which floor you paid for. Entry is from the lower ground floor of Dubai Mall, not the tower's street frontage.

Which ticket actually to buy

There are two decisions that decide what you pay, and most people get them wrong. The first is which deck. The standard At the Top ticket takes you to levels 124 and 125, about 452 metres up, with an indoor floor and an open-air terrace. The At the Top SKY ticket adds level 148 at 555 metres, plus a lounge and a quieter, smaller deck โ€” and it costs two to three times as much. Unless the extra height is the whole reason you came, the 124/125 ticket is the better buy: the view from 125 is already vertiginous, and 148 doesnโ€™t change the photo enough to justify the price.

The second decision is timing. A non-prime slot (early morning or later evening) runs from around AED 189, roughly ยฃ40. The prime sunset slot is closer to AED 240โ€“250, about ยฃ52, because you get daylight, the sunset and the city lights coming on in one visit. That premium is real, and the sunset slots sell out first, so book online before you go rather than turning up โ€” lift capacity is limited and thereโ€™s no dependable on-the-day queue.

Getting in, when to go, and is it worth it?

The entrance is not the towerโ€™s street frontage. You go in from the lower ground floor of Dubai Mall, signposted โ€œAt the Topโ€, which means a walk through the mall and a security and lift queue of twenty to thirty minutes even with a timed ticket. Allow an hour to ninety minutes on the decks themselves. Pair the visit with the free Dubai Fountain show on the plaza below โ€” you can see the tower lit up at night without paying a dirham.

Itโ€™s worth it on a clear day, a waste on a bad one. Dubaiโ€™s high-summer haze and dust can turn the view into grey soup no matter which floor you bought, so check visibility before you commit to a slot. If the sky is clear, the early-morning non-prime ticket is quieter, cheaper and just as sharp as sunset โ€” the sunset slot is the photographerโ€™s choice, not the value one. Standard UAE entry rules apply to your trip (most UK passport holders get a free visa on arrival); the GOV.UK United Arab Emirates page is the source to check before you fly.

Burj Khalifa FAQs

Do you need to book Burj Khalifa tickets in advance?
Yes. The cheaper non-prime slots sell out first, and the sunset hour books up days ahead in peak season. The lift capacity is limited and there is no reliable on-the-day queue, so buy a timed ticket online via the official site or a reputable partner before you go.
Is the Burj Khalifa worth it?
Yes, on a clear day. The view down over the city and out to the Gulf is genuinely striking, and the lift ride is part of it. On a hazy or dusty day โ€” common in high summer โ€” the photos turn into grey soup whatever you paid, so check the weather and skip it if visibility is poor. You can also see the tower lit up for free from Dubai Mall's fountain plaza.
Is the level 148 SKY ticket worth the extra money?
Only if the height itself matters to you. Level 148 (555m) adds an outdoor terrace, a lounge and a smaller, less crowded deck, but the actual view is not dramatically different from level 125 at 452m. For most visitors the standard 124/125 ticket at a third of the price is the better buy.
What is the best time to go up the Burj Khalifa?
The sunset slot gives you daylight, the sunset and the city lights coming on in one visit, which is why it's priced highest and sells out first. If you want to save money, an early morning non-prime slot is clearer and far quieter.
