In short

Rovinj at a glance

Rovinj is a 2- to 3-night Istrian short break built around a car-free Venetian old town: fly into Pula 38km away, sleep in or just below the old town if you want atmosphere over beach access, climb St Euphemia's bell tower for the view, and come in June or September rather than the July-August crush.

The short version

  • Pula (PUY) is the nearest airport at about 38km; a shuttle bus is roughly โ‚ฌ15, a private taxi โ‚ฌ60-โ‚ฌ80.
  • The old town peninsula is pedestrian-only, so you park at the edge (Valdibora or the port lots) and walk your bags in.
  • Stay in or just below the old town for atmosphere; pick Mulini, Borik or Cuvi if you want beach access and easy parking.
  • June and September are the sweet spot: warm sea, lighter crowds and roughly 20-30% off peak July-August rates.
  • Two or three nights is enough for Rovinj itself; bolt on Pula's Roman arena or the Brijuni islands if you want a fourth.

Rovinj is the photogenic one on Istriaโ€™s west coast: a Venetian fishing town squeezed onto a small peninsula, with the baroque bell tower of St Euphemia standing over a tangle of pastel houses and the Adriatic on three sides. It earns its place on every โ€œprettiest town in Croatiaโ€ list, and thatโ€™s both the draw and the catch โ€” by late morning in summer the day-trip boats from Pula and Porec empty into the old town and the narrow Grisia steps clog up. The fix is simple: come in June or September rather than August, climb the tower and walk the lanes early or at golden hour, and treat the harbour-front bars as a view to enjoy briefly rather than a place to run a dinner tab.

The single planning decision that shapes a Rovinj trip is the car. The old town peninsula is pedestrian-only, so you cannot drive to your door โ€” you park at an edge-of-town lot like Valdibora and carry bags in, and in peak season those lots fill and charge around โ‚ฌ3-โ‚ฌ5 an hour. A hire car is worth it only if you plan to roam wider Istria: Pulaโ€™s Roman arena 40 minutes south, the Lim fjord, or the hilltop towns inland. For Rovinj alone, you donโ€™t need one.

Two or three nights is the right length. Thatโ€™s enough for the bell-tower view, the old-town lanes, a swim and walk at Punta Corrente forest park, and a couple of unhurried konoba dinners a few streets back from the water. Below, the structured planning โ€” where to stay, how to get in from Pula, what to budget in pounds, and the best months โ€” picks up from here.

Top things to do in Rovinj

Grisia and the old town lanes

Grisia is the stepped cobbled street that climbs through Rovinj's old town to St Euphemia's church, lined with art galleries, studios and washing strung between the houses. It's free to wander any time, and the trick is to do it slowly, either early in the morning or at golden hour, before the day-trip boats from Pula and Porec fill the lanes.

St Euphemia's bell tower

Rovinj's 61m baroque campanile, modelled on St Mark's in Venice, crowns the old town and is the single best thing you can do here. You pay roughly โ‚ฌ5 to climb a long, creaky wooden staircase to the top, where the reward is a sweeping view over the terracotta roofs, the harbour and the offshore islands. Go in clear weather and decent shoes.

Where to stay first

The areas that make a first visit easier โ€” not an exhaustive directory.

Old town peninsula

ยฃยฃยฃ premium

The reason you come: car-free Venetian lanes, harbour views and the most atmosphere. Expect to carry bags from a car park, lots of steps, restaurant noise below your window and the highest summer prices in town.

Best for: Couples, first-timers, atmosphere over convenience

Browse hotels On the peninsula

Just below the old town (centre fringe)

ยฃยฃ mid-range

The streets around Valdibora market and the bus station: a few minutes' walk to the lanes, easier to reach with a car, and better value than sleeping inside the walls.

Best for: Walkable base without premium prices

Browse hotels 5-10 min walk

Mulini

ยฃยฃยฃ premium

Seafront resort strip south of the old town, on the promenade towards Punta Corrente. Best for big hotels, beach access and a smooth walk into the lanes without the car-park hassle.

Best for: Hotel comfort, beach-first stays

Browse hotels 10-15 min walk

Borik / Cuvi

ยฃ value

Quieter pine-fringed areas north and south of the centre with pebble beaches and far easier parking. Choose these for a calmer, better-value family base; you'll walk or drive 15-25 minutes to the old town.

Best for: Families, value, drivers

Browse hotels 15-25 min walk or short drive

Airport to city centre

Rovinj airport transfer options
OptionTimeCostBook ahead?
Shuttle bus to Rovinj bus station ~60 min about โ‚ฌ15 online, โ‚ฌ18 on board Bus station is ~1.5km from the old town
Public bus via Pula 1.5-2h with a change from about โ‚ฌ7 booked ahead Cheapest but slowest; not ideal with luggage
Private taxi / transfer 40-50 min usually โ‚ฌ60-โ‚ฌ80 (up to 4) Best with luggage or late arrivals
Hire car ~40 min drive fuel plus old-town parking Only worth it for wider Istria touring
Pre-book a door-to-door transfer

When to go

Sweet spot: June and September are the sweet spot: sea around 22-24C, long days, and the worst of the crowds either not yet arrived or just gone, with accommodation roughly 20-30% cheaper than peak. May and early October are quieter and cheaper still if you'll trade some beach time for lighter lanes.

July and August are peak everything in Rovinj: peak heat, peak prices and a day-trip-boat crowd that fills the old town by late morning. Winter is quiet and cheap but many seafront restaurants and some hotels close, so it's a wander-and-coffee trip rather than a swimming one.

What it costs

UK return flights to Pula run roughly ยฃ40-ยฃ130 in the shoulder months when booked ahead; Jet2 added London Gatwick, Manchester and East Midlands routes for summer 2026, but seats are mostly seasonal and summer weekend fares climb fast.

Daily budget per person

Sample trip: A realistic 3-night mid-range Rovinj break for one person is roughly ยฃ430-ยฃ640 before shopping: ยฃ80-ยฃ180 flights, ยฃ210-ยฃ360 hotel share, ยฃ90-ยฃ120 food and drink, plus ยฃ30-ยฃ60 for transfers, the bell tower and a Pula or boat day.

The fastest way to overspend is eating and drinking right on the harbour, where a glass of wine runs 15-20% more than a couple of streets back. Walk inland for konobas and you'll eat well for โ‚ฌ15-โ‚ฌ20 a main.

Rovinj FAQs

How many days do you need in Rovinj?
Two or three nights covers the old town, St Euphemia's tower, Punta Corrente and a long lunch comfortably. Add a fourth night only if you want a day trip to Pula's Roman arena or the Brijuni islands.
What's the nearest airport to Rovinj?
Pula (PUY), about 38km south. A summer shuttle bus to Rovinj bus station costs roughly โ‚ฌ15 and takes about an hour; a private taxi is โ‚ฌ60-โ‚ฌ80 and takes 40-50 minutes. Trieste and Zagreb are distant fallbacks.
Can you drive into Rovinj old town?
No. The old town peninsula is pedestrian-only, so you park at an edge-of-town lot such as Valdibora or the port and walk your bags in, 5-15 minutes. Peak-season parking runs about โ‚ฌ3-โ‚ฌ5 an hour and lots fill fast, so check whether your accommodation has a space.
When is the best time to visit Rovinj?
June and September: warm enough to swim, but without the July-August crowds and prices. May and early October are quieter and cheaper again if cooler sea and shorter days don't bother you.
