Universal Studios Japan
How to visit Universal Studios Japan: the date-priced Studio Pass, getting into Super Nintendo World, whether the Express Pass is worth it, and how to plan a full day.
Where
Osaka, Japan
Opening hours
Usually 09:00–21:00, but genuinely variable — as early as 08:00 and as late as 22:00 in peak periods (summer, Golden Week, Christmas), and as short as 10:00–19:00 on quiet winter weekdays. Confirm your exact date's hours on usj.co.jp before you go.
Tickets
1-Day Studio Pass from about ¥8,900 (≈£47) for adults and ~¥5,400 (≈£28) for children 4–11, rising with demand on the date calendar. Express Pass 4 from ~¥12,800 (≈£67) and Express Pass 7 around ¥17,800 (≈£94), both on top of the Studio Pass and both date-priced.
Time needed
A full day — open to close. With two headline lands (Super Nintendo World and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter) plus the studio rides, you will not see it properly in half a day.
In short
Visiting Universal Studios Japan
Buy your dated 1-Day Studio Pass online before you fly — prices change by the day and sell-outs happen on weekends and Japanese holidays. Getting into Super Nintendo World needs a separate Area Timed Entry slot: either grab a free one in the app the moment you're through the gates (they often run out by mid-morning) or pay for an Express Pass version that guarantees entry. Treat it as a full day, arrive 30–45 minutes before the posted opening, and decide on the Express Pass based on the date, not the brochure.
Which ticket to buy, and when
There are two decisions that make or break a USJ day, and both happen before you arrive. First, the 1-Day Studio Pass is date-priced: the same ticket costs less on a quiet January Tuesday than on a Saturday in Golden Week, prices move with expected crowds, and dates go on sale roughly two months ahead. Popular days genuinely sell out, so buy your dated Studio Pass online before you fly rather than gambling on the ticket booth.
Second, Super Nintendo World — the Mario land everyone comes for — is gated by an Area Timed Entry slot, separate from your Studio Pass. The free option is to open the official USJ app the second you’re through the gates, tap “Area Timed Entry Ticket”, pick Super Nintendo World and grab the earliest workable slot. On a busy day those free slots can be gone by around 10:30, which is why people queue before opening. The paid shortcut is an Express Pass version that bundles a guaranteed Nintendo World slot — Express Pass 4 from around ¥12,800 and Express Pass 7 around ¥17,800, both on top of your Studio Pass and both date-priced like the entry ticket.
Getting there, timing the day, and is it worth it?
Getting in is easy: take the JR Yumesaki (Sakurajima) Line to Universal City Station, about 12 minutes and ¥180 direct from Osaka Station, then a five-minute walk past the CityWalk shops to the gates. From Shin-Osaka allow 35–40 minutes with a change at Osaka. Aim to be there 30–45 minutes before the posted opening time — hours swing from 08:00 in summer to 10:00 on slow winter days, so check your actual date — both to clear security and to win the race for a free timed-entry slot.
It’s a full day, not a morning, and it’s worth it if Super Nintendo World and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter are on your list — the Mario Kart ride and the Mine Cart coaster are the real draw. The Express Pass isn’t a luxury you always need: skip it on a quiet weekday when an early arrival and a free slot do the job, but on a weekend, a Japanese holiday or your only day in Osaka, paying to remove the timed-entry lottery is the sane choice.
